Out of 300 million people in US 85% have health insurance. Of these 60% are covered through insurance offered at place of employment. There are about 45 million uninsured Americans also and out of them 500,000 visit foreign countries for medical treatment. Just like Ites outsourcing, medical tourism is also snowballing into a big debate in US. Recently, union has stopped sending of 60-year-old Blue Ridge Paper Products employee Carl Garrett to India for medical treatment. If Garrett had been treated in India, it would have set a precedent (much to the Insurance companies’ delight) in US as he would have become the first ever US employee to be treated under employee benefits and insurance outside the US.
