Coley Pharmaceutical will outsource drug R&D functions
I really don't know whether the well publicized research and development of hepatitis C vaccine was of any importance or not or why the firm Coley Pharmaceutical axed it at the mid way. But it seems there is something real real fishy going on inside the company, if shedding one fifth of the workforce carry any hint. That's not all, the company has also faired miserably in two clinical trials of Actilon (CPG 10101) where a DNA-based drug candidate was designed to activate the immune system. Why the later one was important because Actilon was one drug the company was making without ant external help. It was truly its baby but it faltered badly.

Coley Pharmaceutical has decided that enough is enough and opted for outsourcing route for future drug analysis, research and development.

Although this decision will cost Coley an estimated £1.1m (€1.7m) in severance costs, the company will save approximately $15m (€11.5m) in development costs. This money will be enough to finance Coley for around three years.
