Brouhaha against YouTube broke all loose when unaired episodes of Fox Series 24 were uploaded on the site much before its release on TV. Since the time of its highly publicized acquisition by Google questions were raised by media houses about using copyrighted materials on the site.
Now the news came out in The San Jose Mercury News that Google has made a deal with AudibleMagic and filter the copyrighted content. This time Google is following Microsft because MySpace also had made a similar move over a week ago.
If you wonder how the technology would check the copyrighted content, lets take a look at the newspaper report,
The system works by comparing the audio fingerprint of a video to a large database of copyrighted material. Founded in 1999, Audible Magic originally was focused on the problem of monitoring radio broadcasts. It purchased the technology for audio fingerprinting from Muscle Fish, a Berkeley software company that Audible Magic acquired in 2000.
Even if the report comes out to be true, it’s my gut feeling that YouTube will continue to gain viewers notwithstanding the fact that other not so famous (or not so media favorite) video social sites will keep on providing raunchy and uncensored content. Because probably there is no publicity like bad or good publicity, when a news or brand is always on top at every media and remain hot topic of discussions for longer period of time, it ultimately creates a strong branding value. That’s one.
And secondly we should not see Viacom’s demand of removing over 100,000 video clips from YouTube in inclusion of mainstream media’s gross perception towards Google. I seriously feel in coming times many media players will get associated with Google and/or YouTube for promotional purposes especially when they know how it's extremely difficult to break the clutter these days. No wonder, on Monday NBA signed a deal with YouTube for a new website called, NBA Channel which would contain highlights and behind-the-scenes videos featuring celebrity NBA players.
