It seems the reluctance to outsource (or should I say fear and uneasiness) R&D function is decreasing amongst companies. More than routine outsourcing businesses like help desk and data processing a trend of getting intellectual property work done is increasingly emerging. A recent study done by Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) Survey R&D activity occurring offshore will increase from current 65% to 84% by 2010. Amount of companies getting their work done by third parties also will be growing from present 64% to 75%.
Big daddies are also embracing newer innovative techniques like inviting outsiders to contribute to R&D by opening up APIs. After all social web2.0 trend is on full swing these days. No wonder,
Microsoft, for example, recently released a free game development kit for its xBox 360 and launched an online marketplace where folks can market game titles they’ve developed in an effort to spur added innovation.
