
More than concerned human resource department I believe this is can be great social concern. This news from Reuters on Philippines says that call center workers (now 200,000 strong and a good percentage of them are fresh college pass outs) in the country who have to work on night and graveyard shifts and unfriendly irritated offshore customers increasingly taking shelter to smoking, caffeine and boozing. The salary at the entry level have risen 69 percent since 2003 and top catch a post shift drink or boozing at daybreak has become a norm. Or should we say a style statement. The outsourcing industry in the country may be generating billions and growing at scorching rate but it seems like the social support has not kept up with the job creation.
Country’s social fabric is on stretch. Rosalie Montenegro, senior vice president of the Call Centre Business Group under Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) says, "We need to invest in social wellness of our kids because the next generation should be the highest focus going forward."
