For some, management skills can be learnt on B-schools and some learn it from on the spot, from the crooked world of management.
You learn it on B-school campus or off it, the basic rules always remain the same. They are only very few, unlike Chinese characters or alphabets, they do not come in thousands and thousands. Contrary to myth, they are very few, the golden, always relevant, always contemporary less than half a dozen management skills that every BPO manager should possess are laid below;
1. Coaching: As a manager you just can’t afford to let your employees flounder. You share with them your life’s learning (if you are not insecure, that isJ). You know when to let them learn and when to hang back.
2. Communication: Before trying to get your point across to someone, may be the floor manager or the hardware manager, do you often think long and hard about the content that you are going to speak? That wont help, free flow communication across verticals will only make your standing robust in the organization.
3. Managing Conflict: Conflict resolution is more critical than it sounds. You are good at negotiation, better at mediation, great in helping two sides to work out their problems peacefully.
4. Mentoring: Are a trusted counselor or guide? Kind of friend and philosopher to your agents? Half the battle is won. The positive fragrances are reaching to the higher management without any stumbling block.
5. Public Speaking: If you are terrified to speak in public, mark my word, you are not going to get the promotion. Someone less experienced, someone younger than you by 4/5/6 years may be handed over the responsibility. I may be sound sordid, but that’s what exactly am telling you from my experience.

These tips are spot on and portable. These behaviours are not only required from Managers in the BPO Industry, but Manager's in general! I know of an individual, who unfortunately, was promoted to a Vice President...high level manager, yet, has no idea on how to be a leader. It is such a shame that this individual is part of such a reputable company, yet, this company has managed to mix trash with the great things they do.There must be a way to create a common portal which hiring managers may access to review the performance of leaders / managers, no matter which company they are from. This will help nip the garbage from the get go and stop spreading the virus. When one bad manager moves to another company, he is given the opportunity to teach his team the wrong ways of doing things.
