The rumor that Google will buy SimplyHired first broke by Alarm:Clock today morning. If not business reasons, the job search engine certainly has some other non-(business)-sense news for the acquire, being weighed here,
Simply Hired almost seems like it was built to be acquired by Google. Its angels are GOOG angels, its based in Mountain View, it targets the long tail and landed a MySpace deal, and Google doesn't have a job search tool.
Mirroring notwithstanding, we have seen Google acquiring lot of companies in the recent half a dozen years, but this one, believe you me, does not seem like will give Google a muscle powered proposition, a distinct advantage which so seems like missing from Google arsenal.
In the last six years, look at the list, only couple of them were search related acquisitions. Google’s core strength is not Google spreadsheet or Froogle, its basic Internet/Web SEARCH. Google is undisputed king of Internet search and carry out approximately 70% of total search that’s done on web. Why should it buy out a promise, which is based on job search?’ Can’t it create something of that sort by its own? Branding can follow.
I wonder if SimplyHired has something very unique to offer. Haven’t we seen Indeed.com? So, what value is it bring in anyway?
Now that Microsoft is on a buying spree to down Google from getting best mileage from random future endeavors, may force Google think tank to take a cautious step and buy out before Microsft reaches the bus stop. That’s probably the only way we can explain SimplyHired’s raising of $3 million a year back as angel funding from Google investors like Rajeev Motwani and Ron Conway.
