Italian clothing brand United Colors of Benetton has slashed prices down by 20 per cent this summer thanks to much lower production costs from suppliers in India. The one fifth cut in price also will increase demand, insiders feel. Hong Kong-based Menarin however strangely sited not cost cutting but customer demand has bounded the company to go for Indian designers. Really, Indian designers in such demand? I never knew that. I thought its only due to cost cutting that they are going preferring Indian designers.
United Colors of Benetton is also considering a deodorant manufacturing unit in India for the Indian market. Selective Beauty Export Manager Patrick Malek said,
“We have plans for local production of products like deodorants in high volumes as it is cost effective and by manufacturing locally we would be able to serve the Indian market better. Currently, India contributes three per cent to our global sales, of which two per cent comes from sale of UCB products. Looking at the growing demand for lifestyle brands in India we are targeting to double current sales of 12 million Euros in the country"
