
The spam attack is done professionally, this is a well run and managed industry. And like other mainstream industries this spam industry also ousources its work broadly to China. There are spam brokers, spam distribution networks, spam hosts, there are psychology graduates to scam victims, there are anti detection engines that detect anti-virus software before it spots the rootkit
The driver behind this market is, obviously, monetary gain, says Auckland University's IT security guru, Peter Gutmann. The underground world of cyber criminals has its own sophisticated money laundering business, where funds are moved and laundered in many different ways, for example using compromised bank accounts, he says. There are also cashiers who will cash out and move the funds for you — for a share of the money, of course.
