
Broadly there exists three basic kinds of telephonic interviews. Well, don’t consider me a text book, I am just giving you an idea.
Firstly, You want to be a part of a company, you take the initiative, through networking or by other means like sending resume via mail expressed your desire to get interviewed by the HR manager. If your profile matches up to the job description you may get a call. Mostly, candidates are prepared in this case. 
Secondly, here the recruitment person calls you on the basis of your previous contact left on job sites, social networking sites etc. You are mostly unprepared for the call. How you handle it, is an art.
Thirdly, the junior recruit speaks with you for a available position, you set a time for the interview (phone or on-site).
