The worst affected Xerox employees who were supposed to move to IBM after Xerox decided to outsource its jobs have been dealt with a blow. Now the news is that IBM may forfeit its plan to absorb those workers. The outsourcing to IBM was part of a review of Xerox's operations that had been considered to trim down costs. Right after taking the decision to outsource, Xerox said that not a single employee will lose their job. But it seems things are getting complicated now. Xerox and NBM have infact issued a joint statement yeterday, which said that they believed that "changes will be effected through, for example, attrition, redeployment, and, if necessary, redundancy". So, a stark contradiction to no-jobs-lay-off promise.
So, the bottom line is almost 900 jobs are now on the line of fire as IBM plans to outsource the work to some central European country. Workers will be laid off in phased manner in the next two years. IDA got itself involved with the issue and trying to find out some solution, though it seems unlikely.
The affected jobs are mostly from Xerox's Ballycoolin facility in West Dublin. Xerox employs more than 1,200 people there. On top of that 350 employees are employed at a Dundalk based plant.
