Steve Herzfeld's mother, 89 year old Frances and his 93 year old father, Ernest have now being shifted to Pondicherry, India. Erstwhile French colony, Pondicherry- an abode for aging hippies from around the world gives Herzfeld's parents full fledged nursing home service for less than $2,000 a month (to be specific, approximately $1800, that is almost $15 a day which includes food, rent, daily massage, physical therapy, utilities, medications, phones, 24 hours staffing). Herzfeld's mother suffers from advanced Parkinson’s disease and father is an Alzheimer’s patient.
Best of all, the many drugs the couple require cost less than 20 percent of what they do at home, and salaries for their six-person staff are so cheap that the pair now bank $1,000 a month of their $3,000 Social Security payment.
All is fine, I only wonder if Pondicherry nursing homes are equipped enough to deliver first rate medicals service like US.
