
Holiest Islam Holiday starts today on the same day as Rosh Hashana (followed 10 days later by Yom Kippur, the day of Attonment) the Jewish new year. Some consider the coincide as matter of quirk timing, but actually this is not the case. There is a reason behind this. Since Islamic calender is lunar based, the holiday keeps on advancing a few days each year as per the Gregorian calendar and actually can fall in any month of the year. For 2007, Ramdan begins at Sundown Sept 12 and ends on Oct 12.
According to Muslim tradition, Ramadan celebrates the revelation of the Quran, Islamic scripture, to Muhammad in the seventh century by the angel Gabriel.
Rosh Hashanah means head of the year (that's literal translation) which refers to Jewish New Year. Jews from all over the world will welcome Rosh Hashanah, at sundown this evening. The ritual is 5,000 years old, Jews will attempt to awaken their souls over the next few days by listening to musicians blowing on shofars, an ancient instrument made from an animal horn.
