There is a new euphoria that can be prevalent in
South Africa. More than 600,000 students after passing this year’s Matric exam will hit the road and seek their career in the burgeoning BPO industry. The government is also helping these youngsters to get training, as it has set up (govt funded) BPO training centers in some places.
The government has earmarked the sector to drive economic growth. It recently developed a five-year plan that targets BPO foreign investments of $1 billion (R6.77 billion) and 100 000 jobs - 25 000 directly and 75 000 indirectly - by 2010.
Battle for outsourcing pie
These aggressive targets are pitting the country against established destinations such as India, the Philippines and Malaysia. Other emerging BPO centres, such as Kenya, Egypt and eastern Europe, are also jostling for a slice of the multibillion-dollar industry. Source
