Once viewed upon as lunch pad for lucrative career outsourcing industry in India (call center, KPO, LPO, contact centers etc.) are facing stiff competition from sectors like retail, manufacturing, telecom, real estate etc. The attrition rate for the industry in some months reaches a staggering 35%. Also due to the rupee appreciation, salary hike and other perks have dried up considerably over last one year.

Take the case of 21-year-old Varun. “In the last one year, increments haven’t been increasing the way they should have. Even in the case of those who’ve been with the company for a longer period, increments have gone up by only Rs1,000,” says the senior customer executive with Intelenet Global Services. “I can’t understand why this is happening considering that demand has gone up, clients are willing to pay more and most onshore operations in countries such as the UK have been outsourced to India,” he adds.
