India’s outsourcing industry facing mass level health problems

A job in call center, so easily available in India may give a youngster just passed out of school or college an instant boost, some good cash (as compared to other industries), AC office (not a common thing in India) and pick up and drop (again not a common practice) and parties or two in a month, is not necessarily coming without its share of health issues.

This is what a call center agent has to say

"You are making nice money. But the tradeoff is also big," said Vats, who spent nearly two years at IBM Corp.'s call center arm in India, answering customer calls from the United States.

Then, read this one

But, 26-year-old Vaibhav Vats will tell you, it was doing him no good. His weight had grown to 120 kilos (265 pounds) and he was missing out on social life as he worked long overnight hours at a call center. Eventually, he quit.

IHT reports

Call centers and other outsourced businesses such as software writing, medical transcription and back-office work employ more than 1.6 million young men and women in India, mostly in their 20s and 30s, who make much more than their contemporaries in most other professions.health-issues-disorder-call-center-India

They are, however, facing sleep disorders, heart disease, depression and family discord, according to doctors and several industry surveys.

It seems among other things one can blame the lack of awareness as one of the reasons behind this future epidemic. Wonder, what action NASSCOMM, India’s outsourcing body is undertaking.
