Outsourcing of jobs has irked the first world nationals and political leaders, and now it's turn of the people to lose their jobs who once lived in countries like India, Pakistan and Srilanka and currently employed with BBC in UK.
BBC World Service which among other languages also broadcasts in South Asian languages like Hindi, Urdu, Bengali and Sinhali has decided to relocate 50% of its staff closer to where the action actually lies. These journalists have been told to their respective countries and cover news from there or face redundancy. Mostly London based journalists will be affected. They are asked to accept downgraded salaries.
Journalists are protesting, holding events and crying foul against BBC's 'money saving adventure.'
Mike Gardner, Head of Media Relations at the BBC World Service says, "The proposed redeployments of staff to India, Pakistan and Nepal recognise the new media realities in those countries. It aims to serve our audiences in the region better; equip those services with the qualities that will be successful in these fiercely competitive media landscapes; and use resources more efficiently."
